Designed for a sensitive valley, this sustainability focussed house was located to take advantage of long views over a series of man-made lakes and significant ridges.

Four buildings create a farmyard complex, including the house, garage and implement/horse tackle shed. The house is divided into two elements, linked by a covered way and deck wrapped around a pond expanded from the original stream.

The spaces are ‘grounded’ by a series of beautiful rammed earth walls built from the soil of the site, giving an earthy quality to the rooms, with excellent acoustic and thermal qualities. The house is completely off grid, and a high degree of sustainability is incorporated, including solar hot water and photo-voltaic panels, low energy lighting, locally sourced materials, effective use of natural ventilation and energy efficient appliances.
