We have been assisting the Fred Hollows Foundation achieve its admirable goals in the South Pacific for many years. In an attempt to alleviate eye problems and associated health issues, the Foundation is erecting a number of eye clinics throughout the Pacific Islands.

The Regional Eye Centre in Honiara serves not just the Honiara community but the Solomon Islands as a whole through its nationwide outreach program. The building is constructed to New Zealand healthcare standards and contains six consultation rooms, a two-bed operating theatre, a procedure room and a teaching centre.

The design incorporates sustainable features to minimise energy use and running costs, with wide open porches for patient whanau to gather and wait. A double roof increases protection from solar gain whilst encouraging cooling from Venturi-effect natural ventilation. Other features such as solar heating, recycled wastewater and low energy electrical fittings have been incorporated.

Bossley Architects have also designed FHF eye clinics in Madang, Papua New Guinea and Port Vila, Vanuatu.

Already, this innovative and highly sustainable building has had a profound impact for the Fred Hollows Foundation NZ-trained team of eye care staff, patient, and the wider community
