On the Viaduct Harbour in the heart of Auckland, the new 5-star Park Hyatt Hotel offers an exciting range of public facilities and function spaces, including bars, cafes, restaurants, reception halls, hydrotherapy & spa, gym and an external pool.

The building extends to all four corners of the 100m x 50m site, with Julian’s Wall to the west and the Viaduct harbour to the east. All of the hotels public spaces and 195 hotel rooms are arranged around the perimeter of the seven story building. The external façade is cloaked in a combination of sliding and pivoting bronzed stainless steel mesh screens, which provides a shimmering skin of reflections animating the building with natural light. At ground level a colonnade wraps around the building integrating the hotels public spaces into the streetscape and harborside promenade and creating several points of public access through the building.

As a dramatic contrast to the low entry porte-cochere, the dramatic atrium rises to the roof, punctuated by a central cylindrical silo providing vertical access to all levels for guests and staff alike, and bordered by walkways at each level. The Atrium references a Maori whare space, with irregularly shaped fins rising up each side of the atrium and wrapping overhead. Glazing in between the fins allows natural daylight to track across the interior space.

A palette of warm, natural finishes has been selected throughout the hotel interiors including timber, concrete and natural stone. Tukutuku inspired fabric paneling designed by local artist Beronia Scott features in every room. There are 13 different rooms types, ranging from 46m2 to 260 m2 penthouse suites.

We worked closely with the Design Team led by AR+D and the Interior Designers Conran & Partners, and many local consultants to deliver the project.

Artists involved included Lyonel Grant [entry waka], Peata Larkin [lightbox in Atrium], Beronia Scott [tukutuku panels in rooms, reception and lifts], and Ngati Whatua carving teams [exterior pou].
