Ngā Hau Māngere – Old Māngere Bridge at NZIA Awards

Jun 19 / 2023

This stimulating project has already received a few awards and has just picked up two more from the Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects Architecture Awards, namely a 2023 Auckland Award Planning and Urban Design, and a Resene Colour Award.

As much a community facility as a walking and cycling connection, this project was a result of partnership throughout with mana whenua, enthusiastic input from the local communities our highly committed client Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.

The judges citation noted that as well as providing passage for pedestrians, the bridge “has become a much-loved fishing venue. Innovative and grounded through narrative, intent and a true sense of place, this community destination is an inspirational asset for people across Tāmaki Makaurau.

We were privileged to work with great collaborators such as John McNeil, Oliver de Lautour and their team at Aurecon, Sean Burke from Isthmus for the landscaping, mana whenua appointed artist Johnson Witehira and Matthew von Sturmer for art and colour development
