Campbell House

The wonderful 360 degree views afforded by this ridgetop site are accompanied by exposure to winds from all quarters. The linear form of the house is stepped centrally to provide outdoor living areas sheltered from the predominant winds. A corrugated steel monopitch roof floats over the main spaces, supported on lightweight steel trusses. The concrete masonry fins, glass and corrugated plastic which define the living areas contrast with the plywood cladding of the bedroom wings. The house opens generously to the north slope, where olive plantations and swimming pool are being developed.

The house received a NZIA Local Award for Architecture 2002 and was described by the judges as a "truly inspirational piece of architecture".
