2011 November:
PBA sponsors students from Unitec to spend one month in Haiti under the auspices of Architecture for Humanity, assisting with community-led reconstruction and redevelopment initiatives in Haiti. Seven students, accompanied by staff, will work hands-on with the local people on specific projects. For background information and daily updates visit Architecture Students for Humanity

2011 November:
Two PBA projects are shortlisted for the 2011 AAA Cavalier Bremworth Architectural Design Awards. The projects are the Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom cultural centre in Foxton, ( which incorporates an iwi gallery, the National Dutch Museum, a public library, and Flaxtripper Museum),and the ‘ Floating Apartment” in Parnell, Auckland.

2011 November:
Pete Bossley is speaking at the 2011 conference of the International Association of Museum Facility Administrators, about Voyager, the NZ Maritime Museum, and the complexities of designing and building a museum in the aggressive environment over the sea.

2011 October:
PBA wins three awards in the NZIA Auckland awards series, for the Brown-Vujcich House, and the Thorne Bay House. Both houses can be viewed in the Residential section of the website. The Brown Vujcich House received an Auckland Architecture Award and a Resene Colour Award. The judges described it as a “…pleasing, layered series of spaces leading down the hillside. The screen on the street elevation is crisp, delicate and playful, and opens to a lovely split-level entry sequence and an interior exhibiting beautiful cabinetry and an intriguing and subtle use of colour..” The Thorne Bay House also received an Auckland Architecture Award. The judges wrote “..This tree house, skillfully designed for a near-impossible site, allows the protected pohutukawa to take centre stage, generating with its twist and turns, a house of unexpected geometries. What at first appears whimsical is in fact a clever and controlled architecture responding immediately to the surrounding natural environment..”

2011 October:
Construction of the South Waikato Sports and Events Centre begins. At a ceremonial blessing of the site in Tokoroa the Mayor Neil Sinclair praises the PBA designed complex as offering an inspiration to the youth of the region, and noted that the first function is already booked to occur in the building in November 2012!

2011 October:
The Collis House, designed by PBA in 1995 for Barbara and Neil Collis, is featured in Home Magazine, October/November edition, page 78. Entitled Rural Renewal, the house is described as “..and understated renovation …that lives in harmony with the spectacular garden around it…”, and a beautifully crafted home “..comprising a series on interlinked timber pavilions at once rich and casual…”

2011 October:
Two houses by PBA are featured in ‘200 Houses’ published by Images Publishing. The houses included in the international compendium of great houses are the Beach Retreat in the Bay of Islands, and the Seresin House in the Marlborough Sounds. As always we are proud to have our work featured amongst many other fine buildings from around the world.

2011 June:
The extension to Voyager, the tribute to Sir Peter Blake and New Zealand yachting at the Maritime Museum in Auckland, designed by PBA, wins the Excellence Award in the Special Projects Category, and is a finalist in the 2011 Supreme Award of the NZ Property Council Awards.

2011 June:
The Greenways Project website goes live. A proposal to provide a 50 kilometre loop of safe walkways and cycle paths through Auckland is made public.Visual images of the proposal are prepared by PBA. www.greenwaysproject.org.nz

2011 May:
The practice is selected to prepare concept designs for a house in Florida, USA. Andrea Bell and Pete Bossley visit the site mid May and the design stage is proceeding.

2011 May:
The practice is delighted to contribute design work to develop a series of clinics and surgeries for the Fred Hollows Foundation in the Pacific Islands. As support for the valuable work the Foundation does, PBA is designing modular and pre-fabricated units which can be arrayed in a number of variations, to create a range of differently sized clinics to suit various locations.

2011 May:
Pete Bossley Architects is selected to be on a shortlist of architects known as the Design Talent Pool, approved for developments on the Waterfront Auckland land. This includes the Westhaven, Wynyard Quarter, Viaduct Harbour, Queens Wharf and Teal Park areas. More information is available on www.waterfrontauckland.co.nz

2011 April:
Miriam van Wezel and Pete Bossley are featured in the April issue of Habitus, the Australian journal of design. The article, one of the ‘Partnership’ series, is entitled Ground Effect, and looks at the ways in which Miriam’s life as an artist intersects with Pete’s as an architect.

2011 March:
Pete delivers the first of the 2011 SCALA series of public lectures at Unitec School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in Auckland. Entitled ‘Themes Ideas Obsessions’, the presentation looks at some of the guiding principles which have underpinned 30 years of Pete’s architecture, including Landform, Natural Light, Encampments, Openness, Sculptural possibilities, and Eccentricities. The lecture also focuses on the importance of manual drawing in the discovery and design process.

2011 March:
Pete Bossley Architects have been confirmed as architects for the new South Waikato Sports and Events Centre in Tokoroa. The practice won a competition in conjunction with Argon Construction, to design and build the new $6million facility which contains two indoor gymnasia, multiple changing rooms and public Function spaces. The practice has also been engaged to prepare Masterplanning studies for the 32 hectare sports complex in which the Sports and Events Centre is located.

2011 March:
Pete Bossley Architects are pleased to announce the appointment of two new Associates: Peter Sisam and Eva Segedin.
Senior Associate Peter Sisam has extensive experience in delivering commercial projects across a wide range of project types; industrial, commercial, office, mixed use, apartments, hotel and retail development and masterplanning throughout New Zealand and the Pacific. Peter provides his projects with comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the building and construction process. His ability to apply his design skills through all project phases, resolve complex technical issues and manage project teams all contribute to the overall success of the project. Some of Peter’s current projects include a new sports stadium, masterplanning, a national museum and public library and high-end residential.
Associate Eva Segedin’s experience includes single family and high density residential, hotel projects and feasibility analysis. She is currently engaged in many residential projects and a medium density apartment development in Queenstown. Eva specialises in sustainable architecture. She has worked in New York and Dubai. As Project Architect Eva maintains involvement in all stages of the procurement process including; concept design, documentation and contract administration. This ensures a high level of design continuity and quality control is achieved throughout the project. Her attention to detail and enthusiasm make for a creative and enjoyable process.

2011 January:
Senior Associate Andrea Bell is selected to be part of the “Talk to An Architect” marketing campaign by the New Zealand Institute of Architects. This campaign is to encourage people thinking of building to use a registered NZIA architect. View campaign website here

2010 November:
PBA are selected as architects to prepare feasibility studies for modifications to the interior of the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

2010 October:
Pete Bossley Architects receives two awards presented at the annual NZIA awards function in St Mathews in the City, Auckland. The awards are for: Voyager Maritime Museum: NZ IA Auckland Architecture Award, for Public Architecture Glendowie House: NZIA Auckland Architecture Award, Residential In a press release, Alistair Aitken, Chair of Voyager, states Pete Bossley Architects’ design ‘…. is innovative and visually spectacular. It incorporates the very latest in exhibition design and creates an engaging, educational and fun exhibition gallery. Since Blue Water Black Magic opened Voyager has experienced a marked increase in patronage and enjoyed greater visibility at a national level’

2010 October:
Two projects in the UK are completed in conjunction with local consultants. Interior designer Karen Ngan Kee has designed the renovation and interior refurbishment of a terrace house in Knightsbridge, London and also in the selection of furniture and soft furnishings for a former stables building in Bath, England.

2010 October:
Pete Bossley delivers a keynote presentation at the Architectural Designers Association of NZ (ADNZ) annual conference in Nelson. In collaboration with artist Miriam van Wezel, the presentation concerns the role of art and drawing in the architectural design process.

2010 October:
Pete Bossley delivers a public talk in the Fast Forward series at Auckland University. Pete’s talk, entitled Themes and Obsessions, outlines some of the guiding principles and philosophies that have driven many of the projects produced by the practice over the last 30 years.

2010 September:
The Te Awahou Trust is formally launched to steer the $12million museum and library project designed by PBA through to completion.

2010 September:
Eva Segedin, Project Architect at PBA is selected to present a joint paper at the Australasian Housing Researchers Conference in November 2010, in Auckland, entitled ‘New Directions for Housing Research Due to Climate Change in New Zealand’. Eva has also been selected as one of 26 scholars to present at the 2010 Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) Postgraduate Symposium, also in November.

2010 August:
Pete Bossley appears as guest speaker in LATE at the Museum, hosted by Finlay McDonald. The panel, including Rod Oram and Chris Harris, mounted a lively discussion about the importance and need for Innovation in the new Auckland city structure currently being designed.

2010 August:
Whilst in Holland Pete Bossley writes an editorial published in Block, the NZIA monthly journal, entitled ‘Love that Car, love that Train’. After recognising the importance of the bicycle to the overall public transport system in the Netherlands, the piece focuses on the value of private transport (car, motorbike, scooter and bike) being linked in with public transport to provide a comprehensive system. The Emmett Street house wins a gold medal at the 2010 Registered Master Builders Awards in The Auckland Region Category for homes in the $1-2 million range.

2010 July:

Since the opening of the Sir Peter Blake extension to Voyager NZ National Maritime Museum in November 2009, the numbers of free independent visitors to the museum have increased by a remarkable 55%!!

Pete Bossley Architects are shortlisted from a list of 24 to design the new Te Awamutu Cultural and Heritage Centre.

2010 March:

Pete Bossley Architects is selected to design a new house for one of the beautiful sites on the Omarino headland in the Bay of Islands. As well as having designed all the public buildings for this 142 hectare site, PBA have prepared indicative preliminary designs for some of the 19 sites, and currently have another house under construction on one of the northern bays.

2010 March:

Project Architects Eva Segedin embarks on a Masters in Sustainable Architecture at Auckland University School of Architecture, her thesis research subject being residential sustainability with specific reference to the analysis and establishment of Green Ratings for residential buildings, specific to New Zealand conditions.

2010 January:

Pete Bossley Architects are selected to design a new art gallery on the North Shore of Auckland To be known as the Shore Exhibition Centre, the project will create a contemporary facility by converting the 1950s modernist Library and adding an adjacent tower housing new exhibition space, café and back-of-house facilities.

2009 December:

The extension to the Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum in Auckland opens on Saturday December 12. The extension contains exhibits which focus on New Zealand yachting and the achievements of Sir Peter Blake. Speeches by the Prime Minister John Key, Auckland Mayor John Banks, and Lady Pippa Blake are followed by an open day which sees 2500 visitors through the building. This is the most visitors in one day in the history of the museum. Responses to the building and exhibits are extremely positive.

2009 November:

The Forman House (Riddell Road House) wins the Placemakers Supreme Award and Registered Master Builders House of the Year 2009. The house also won the National Category for New Homes over $1 million and the Gib Living Solutions Award. The judges describe it as “a sophisticated design with a rich palette of materials, exquisitely executed producing an absolute masterpiece.” Congratulations to Phil Leach of PSL Construction and his team.

2009 October:

The Thorne Bay House on the waterfront in Takapuna, Auckland wins the Residential Architectural Excellence Highly Commended Award in the NZ Wood Timber Design Awards, for innovative use of timber. The judges comments focus on the sophistication of the design fitting between the mass of Pohutukawa tree brances, weatherskin façade using open jointed boards, and the beautiful detailing and construction.

2009 October:

The Forman House (Riddell Road House) has won a 2009 NZ Institute of Architects Auckland Architecture Award which will be presented at an Awards function on the 13th October.

2009 August:

Two houses designed by Pete Bossley Architects are very successful at the 2009 Registered Master Builders Auckland Awards. -Riddell Road house wins Gold Medal in the Auckland Regional Category for homes over $1million, the Gib Living Solutions Award, Auckland House of the Year, and the Placemakers Supreme Award. -Thorne Bay house wins a Gold Medal in the Auckland Regional Category for homes over $1million Both houses are finalists for the 2009 Registered Master Builders National House of the Year Award (to be announced in November).

2009 August:

The Forman House, aka ‘Riddell Road House’ was selected as one of five finalists in the BMW/HomeNZ Home of the Year Competition. The house features in the August/September edition of Home magazine, with a profile of Senior Associate and Project Architect Andrea Bell. An accompanying article in the magazine demonstrates the Pete Bossley Architects has had more houses selected as finalists or winners than any other architect.

2009 August:

On Thursday August 6th, NZL32 was installed into the museum. It was brought over from Halsley Wharf and lifted onto a cantilevered platform at the museum during the early hours of Thursday morning. At 6:45am the final move began, NZL32 was rolled inside the building through the opening with 50mm to spare. Once it was located under the waiting mast it was hoisted up to its final position where it is hung from the roof structure via the rigging. The bulb and keel were then installed, the boat rigged and the sail set to complete the exhibition of NZL32.

2009 July:
Work on site for the alterations to the NZ Maritime Museum is gearing up for the final push and is due for completion at the end of July. The scaffolding is starting to come down unveiling the beautiful light qualities of the Danpalon cladding. Upon completion of the building the exhibition fitout of Blue Water Black Magic – A Tribute to Sir Peter Blake will be undertaken over the following 3 months before the official opening in early December 2009.

2009 June:
During June, the King and Queen of Spain visited the NZN Maritime Museum site and toured the museum before unveiling a plaque commemorating their visit. The King is a former Olympic sailor.

The Forman House in Glendowie has been selected as one of five finalists for Home magazine’s 2009 Home of the Year. The winner will be announced in early August.

2008 December:
The Phaidon Atlas of 21st Century World Architecture is published, featuring three Pete Bossley Architects projects: the McCahon Artist Retreat, the Heatley House in Hawaii, and the Seresin House in Marlborough Sounds.

2008 November:
Pete Bossley Architects is selected from a long list of architects to design a new eco-lodge on Stewart Island.
